How to Use This Calculator
1. Select Your Region
North American and European trains use different prototype dimensions. A "boxcar" in North America is very different from a European covered wagon. Picking the right region gives you accurate reference dimensions.
2. Choose Equipment Type
Different equipment has different proportions. A boxcar and a locomotive don't scale the same way. Pick the type that matches what you're measuring. If you're not sure, start with "Boxcar" since they're the most standardized.
3. Measure Your Model
You'll need length and/or height. Here's how to measure correctly:
- Length: Measure from coupler face to coupler face. If couplers are missing, measure the body length and add about 0.5" for HO scale (adjust proportionally for other scales).
- Height: Measure from the bottom of the wheels (where they touch the rail) to the top of the roof. This is often more reliable than length.
- Tools: A regular ruler works fine. Calipers are better but not required.
4. Enter Measurements
Type in your measurements using inches or millimeters. You can enter just length, just height, or both. Having both measurements gives you a more confident result.
5. Review Results

Understanding Your Results
Confidence Levels
- 70%+ (Excellent match): Your measurements closely match this scale. You can be confident in the identification.
- 50-70% (Good match): Probable match, but there's some variation. Could be manufacturing tolerances or measurement differences.
- Below 50% (Possible): The scale is mathematically possible but not a strong match. Consider trying a different equipment type or measuring another piece.
Multiple Matches
Sometimes you'll see several scales listed. This happens because model manufacturers don't always hit exact dimensions. There's also normal measurement error to consider. When you see multiple matches, the one with the highest confidence is your best bet.
Narrow Gauge Possibility

Scale vs. Gauge: What's the Difference?
These two terms get used interchangeably, but they mean different things. Understanding the difference helps you buy compatible equipment and avoid expensive mistakes.
What is Scale?
Scale is the size ratio between the model and the real thing. HO scale is 1:87.1, meaning the model is 87.1 times smaller than the prototype. An 87-foot boxcar becomes 12 inches in HO scale. Different scales exist because people have different needs: small apartments need compact N scale, while garden railroads use large G scale.
What is Gauge?
Gauge is the distance between the rails. Standard gauge in the real world is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. Each model scale has a corresponding track gauge: HO uses 16.5mm track, N uses 9mm, O uses about 32mm. When someone says "HO gauge track," they mean track that's 16.5mm between the rails.
Why the Confusion?
Marketing often uses "gauge" and "scale" interchangeably. You'll hear "HO gauge" even though technically that's not quite right. Most of the time it doesn't matter because scale and gauge align: HO scale trains run on HO gauge (16.5mm) track. But sometimes they don't match up, and that's where it gets interesting.
When Scale and Gauge Don't Match
Narrow gauge modeling intentionally mismatches scale and gauge. Here are the most common examples:
- On30: O scale bodies (1:48) running on HO gauge track (16.5mm). This represents 30-inch narrow gauge railroads. Very popular for modeling mining and logging operations.
- HOn3: HO scale bodies (1:87.1) on narrower 10.5mm track, representing 3-foot gauge prototypes.
- OO9: British OO scale on N gauge track, representing 2-foot narrow gauge lines.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know what scale my old Lionel trains are?
Most vintage Lionel trains are O gauge, but not true 1:48 O scale. They are often called "O27" or "traditional O" and are slightly undersized compared to scale models. Measure the track gauge: if it is about 1.25 inches (31.75mm), you have O gauge equipment.
Can I run different scales on the same track?
No. Each scale requires its specific track gauge. The one exception is narrow gauge modeling, where scales like On30 use O scale bodies on HO gauge track. But mixing regular HO and N scale on the same track is not possible.
My trains do not match any scale exactly. Why?
Manufacturing tolerances vary by brand and era. Some vintage trains used non-standard proportions, and beginner train sets sometimes use simplified sizing. Try measuring multiple pieces. If they are consistent with each other, the scale identification is probably correct.
