The left side measures track gauge (the distance between rails). The right side measures wheel back-to-back (the distance between the inside faces of wheels on an axle). There are also inch and millimeter rulers in the center for general workbench use.

- HO scale (track gauge: 0.650" / 16.5mm) - The most popular scale. About 90% of inherited collections are HO.
- N scale (track gauge: 0.354" / 9mm) - Second most common. Noticeably smaller than HO.
- O scale (track gauge: 1.252" / 32mm) - Larger trains, often Lionel. Common in older collections.
- G scale (track gauge: 1.766" / 45mm) - Garden railroad size. You'll know it when you see it.

How to Use the Gauge Ruler
Track Gauge (left side)
Place the left edge of the ruler against the inside of one rail. Look for the colored line that aligns with the inside of the opposite rail. The matching color tells you the scale.
Wheel Back-to-Back (right side)
Place the right edge against the inside face of one wheel. The colored line matching the opposite wheel's inside face indicates the scale. This measurement matters for troubleshooting derailments and checking wheel standards.
Center Rulers
Standard inch ruler with 1/8" increments and a millimeter ruler for general measuring. Handy for checking coupler heights, car lengths, and other detail work.
Print Instructions
Getting accurate measurements requires printing at the correct size. Here's how:
- Open the PDF and select Print
- Set scale to 100% or Actual Size (this is the most important step)
- Make sure "Fit to page" or "Shrink to fit" is OFF
- Use standard US Letter paper (8.5" x 11")
- Print and check the 1-inch calibration bar with a real ruler
- If it measures exactly 1 inch, your gauge is accurate
- Cut out the ruler strip along the outer border
If the calibration bar is off, check your print settings. Browser print dialogs sometimes default to scaling.
Why Track Gauge Matters
Track gauge is the distance between the inside faces of the rails. Every scale has a specific gauge, and if it's off, trains derail. Common problems:
- Track out of gauge - Rails spread or pinch over time, especially on curves
- Wheel gauge issues - Wheels can shift on axles or wear down
- Mixed manufacturers - Not all track is made to exact NMRA specs
A quick check with a gauge tool identifies the problem. If your trains run fine on some track but derail on others, the track gauge is usually the culprit.

How do I print the track gauge at the correct size?
Set your print scale to 100% or "Actual Size" and turn off any fit-to-page options. After printing, measure the 1-inch calibration bar with a ruler. If it's exactly one inch, your gauge is accurate.
What's the difference between track gauge and wheel back-to-back?
Track gauge is the distance between the inside faces of the two rails. Wheel back-to-back is the distance between the inside faces of the wheels on an axle. Wheels are always slightly narrower than track gauge to provide clearance and allow the flanges to guide the wheels.
What's the difference between scale and gauge?

My measurement falls between two scale marks. What do I have?
Manufacturing tolerances mean not every piece measures exactly to spec. Go with the closest match. If measurements are consistently off, you might have worn wheels, out-of-spec imports, or older equipment made before standards were firmly established.
Why does my model train keep derailing?
Derailments often come from track gauge problems. Rails can spread on curves or get knocked out of alignment. Use the track gauge side of the ruler to check suspect sections. If the gauge varies along your layout, that's likely the cause.
Can I use a regular ruler instead of a track gauge?
You can, but it's harder. A standard ruler measures from the outside edge, so you'd need to account for the ruler's thickness and carefully align it with the inside of the rails. A purpose-made gauge is faster and more accurate.
