What Is N Scale? The Space-Efficient Choice
N scale debuted in Europe in the early 1960s and arrived in North America around 1967. At 1:160, it is roughly half the linear size of HO scale — meaning it takes up roughly one quarter the floor area for equivalent scenery. A mainline loop requiring a 10-foot diameter in HO fits in about 5 feet in N scale.
North American N scale track runs on 9.0mm gauge rails per NMRA S-3.2. In Japan, N scale is the dominant hobby scale, with the largest selection of commercially available N scale equipment in the world — both at 1:150 for Cape gauge prototypes and 1:160 for Shinkansen.

What is the difference between North American N scale and British N gauge?
North American N scale (NMRA S-1.2) uses a 1:160 ratio. British N gauge uses a 1:148 ratio (2mm = 1 foot), also on 9mm track. This means British N models are noticeably larger than North American N models of the same prototype. Both run on 9mm track. Japanese N scale uses 1:150 for Cape gauge (3'6") prototypes and 1:160 for standard gauge Shinkansen models.
Can N scale and HO scale share a layout?
No — N scale (9mm track gauge) and HO scale (16.5mm track gauge) are incompatible for operation. However, some modelers intentionally mix N scale backgrounds (smaller buildings, distant scenery) with HO scale foreground to create forced perspective and the illusion of greater depth.
